Drywall Repair in Springfield, IL

Springfield walls move. The ground here is prairie soil over clay and glacial till, and it swells when spring rain soaks it and shrinks when August dries it out. Add the furnace running hard from November to March and the humidity of a Central Illinois summer, and framing expands and contracts all year. That movement shows up as diagonal cracks above doors and windows, nail pops along ceiling seams, and tape that lifts in the corners. Older houses near downtown have their own version of the story: lath and plaster that has loosened from its keys after a century of settling, ceilings with spiderweb cracks, and patches from past repairs that never quite blended in. And in any house, doorknobs, moving day and the occasional water leak leave holes that need fixing.

We repair the wall so it reads as one piece again. For drywall, we cut damaged areas back to sound material, set a proper patch with backing where needed, tape and mud in thin coats, and feather the edges wide so the repair doesn't show as a bump. For plaster, we re-anchor loose sections to the lath with plaster washers, fill cracks with materials that bond to old plaster, and skim to blend. We match common textures like orange peel and knockdown as closely as possible, prime the patch, and can paint it to match if you have the paint. Dust is controlled with drop cloths and sanding methods that keep it in the work area, and we clean up before we leave.

What this covers

  • Doorknob holes, dents and impact damage
  • Stress cracks over doors, windows and in corners
  • Nail and screw pops along ceiling and wall seams
  • Plaster crack repair and re-anchoring to lath
  • Water-stained or soft drywall after a leak is fixed
  • Texture matching for orange peel and knockdown
  • Patching after fixture, fan or outlet changes
  • Priming and paint touch-up to blend the repair
A note from around here: In Aristocracy Hill, Enos Park and the blocks around the Lincoln Home, it's mostly plaster that has let go from its lath; in the 1950s and 1960s ranches on the south and west sides, nail pops and seam cracks; and in the newer subdivisions out by Koke Mill Road and in Chatham, settlement cracks above doorways in the first years after construction.

How a drywall repair visit usually goes

Look and Plan

We look at the damage, check for moisture or movement behind it, and agree with you on the repair method and whether you want paint included.

Protect and Prepare

We cover floors and furniture, cut back damaged material, and add backing or plaster anchors so the patch has something solid to grab.

Patch and Finish

We tape and apply compound in thin coats, letting each one set, then sand and texture to match the wall around it.

Prime, Paint and Clean

We prime the repair, paint it if you've asked us to, vacuum up dust and leave the room ready to use.

Springfield's weather plays a big part in when drywall cracks appear. Many homeowners notice new cracks in late winter, when the heat has run for months and the air is at its driest, and again in late summer after a dry spell has shrunk the soil under the foundation. If you see a crack in February, it's often worth waiting for a milder month to repair it so the wall has settled into its normal range. In basements, we see damage from small leaks after heavy spring storms, especially where downspouts dump water close to the house. We'll fix the wall and also point out the source so it doesn't happen again.

What shapes the price in Springfield

Drywall pricing depends mostly on the size and number of repairs, how high they are and what finish has to match. A handful of nail pops or small dings in a single room won't take long. Larger patches, ceiling repairs, tall stairwells or water-damaged sections take more time and materials. Plaster usually takes longer than drywall because of re-anchoring and the extra coats needed to blend. Texture matching and painting add time, especially if the wall needs a full coat to hide the patch. Bundling several repairs into one visit is almost always the most economical route, because drying time between coats can be used on other tasks.

Neighbors often ask

Why does the same crack keep coming back over my door?

A crack that keeps returning is usually following movement in the framing, which happens a lot in Springfield as the soil swells and shrinks with the seasons. Simply filling it with more compound won't hold. We open the crack, bridge it with mesh or paper tape embedded in setting compound, and feather it wide so the wall can flex a little without reopening. If the crack is widening noticeably or doors nearby are starting to bind, we'll mention it so you can keep an eye on the foundation.

Is it possible to save old plaster, or does it all need to come out for drywall?

Most plaster can be repaired, and in an older home it's usually worth keeping. We re-secure loose areas with plaster washers, fill cracks and holes with compatible materials and skim the surface to match. If a section is crumbling or the lath has failed, we cut it out and fill the opening with drywall shimmed to the plaster's thickness, so the wall stays flat and the repair disappears under paint.

I had a leak from the upstairs bathroom. Can you fix the ceiling?

Yes, once the source of the leak has been fixed and the area has dried. We cut out water-damaged drywall back to solid material, check that the framing is dry and sound, install a new piece, tape, mud and texture to match, and seal any stain that remains with a stain-blocking primer before paint. If the leak was from a supply line or toilet, our licensed plumbers can repair that too, in the same visit.

Will I be able to see the patch afterward?

On flat painted walls, a well-done patch should be invisible once painted with the same color and sheen. Slight differences can show up if the original paint has faded or if the wall has a strong light shining across it. We feather the edges widely, prime before painting and, if needed, recommend painting the whole wall corner to corner for a uniform finish.

Can you fix drywall damaged by a storm or a falling limb?

Yes. After the roof or siding has been repaired, we replace soaked or broken drywall, check insulation behind it, and finish the patch to match. Take photos before anything is removed for insurance purposes, and we can provide a written description of the work we did.
