Door Repair & Adjustment in Springfield, IL

Doors in Springfield have a hard life. In July and August, humid air swells wooden doors and frames until they rub and stick. In January, the furnace dries the house out and the same doors shrink, leaving gaps that let in cold drafts and make latches miss their strikes. On top of that, houses settle. A hundred-year-old home in Aristocracy Hill or Harvard Park has had a century to shift, and even a twenty-year-old house in Chatham or Sherman can move as its framing dries and the clay soil under it swells and shrinks. The result is doors that drag on the floor, won't stay closed, rattle in their frames, or need a shoulder to open.

We start with the simplest fix and work up. Often, tightening loose hinge screws or replacing short screws with long ones that bite into the framing pulls a sagging door back into place. We adjust strikes, shim hinges, and fix or replace worn latches and locksets. If a door still rubs, we plane or sand only where needed and seal the bare edge. Exterior doors get new weatherstripping and door sweeps so they seal against wind and snow. We repair or replace storm doors, adjust their closers and replace worn hardware, and can swap old knobs for levers or install new deadbolts. The aim is a door that swings freely, closes with a click and stays closed.

What this covers

  • Sticking, rubbing and sagging doors
  • Latches and strikes that won't catch
  • Loose or worn hinges and screw holes
  • Weatherstripping and door sweeps for drafts
  • Storm door repair, closers and hardware
  • Lockset, deadbolt and lever handle installation
  • Sliding patio door track and roller adjustment
  • Interior door replacement and pre-hung installs
A note from around here: Tall solid-wood doors in Enos Park and Aristocracy Hill houses tend to sag on old hinges, while hollow-core interior doors in 1960s and 1970s ranches and split-levels around the south side and Rochester often crack or lose their latches.

How a door repair & adjustment visit usually goes

Diagnose

We open and close the door, check hinges, strike, frame and gaps, and look for signs of sagging or settling.

Tighten and Adjust

We tighten or replace hinge screws, shim hinges and adjust the strike before removing any wood.

Plane and Seal if Needed

If the door still rubs, we plane or sand only where needed and seal bare edges against moisture.

Weatherproof and Test

We add or replace weatherstripping and sweeps on exterior doors and test that the door swings, latches and locks smoothly.

Springfield's spring storms and winter winds make exterior door seals especially important. A front door that rattles in a March wind or lets snow drift under it in January usually needs new weatherstripping, a new sweep and a hinge adjustment so it closes tight. Storm doors take a beating from the wind too, and we often replace closers and safety chains that have been stretched or broken when a gust caught the door. In older neighborhoods, many homes still have original doors and hardware worth saving; we'll repair and adjust them carefully rather than recommending replacement.

What shapes the price in Springfield

Door repair pricing depends on what's causing the problem and how much work it takes to fix. Hinge adjustments and strike changes are quick. Planing and sealing a door, especially a heavy solid-wood one, takes longer, and replacing weatherstripping on an older door can take more time if the old seals are painted in. Storm doors with worn closers and hardware, sliding doors with damaged tracks or rollers, and replacing doors or locksets add parts and time. Fixing several doors in one visit is more economical than calling for each one separately.

Neighbors often ask

Why does my door stick in summer but not in winter?

That's humidity at work. Wooden doors and frames take on moisture during Springfield's humid summers and expand, then dry out and shrink once the heat comes on. If the door rubs only a little in summer, adjusting the hinges may be enough. If it binds badly, we'll plane the edge where it rubs and seal it so it absorbs less moisture. Planing too much in July can leave a gap in January, so we take off only what's necessary.

Can you fix a door that won't latch?

Usually, yes. Most latching problems come from a door that has sagged slightly or a strike plate that no longer lines up with the latch. We tighten hinges, shim if needed and move or adjust the strike so the latch catches cleanly. If the latch itself is worn or broken, we replace it, and we can upgrade old knobs to levers while we're at it.

My front door lets in a cold draft. Do I need a new door?

Not necessarily. Many drafty doors just need new weatherstripping, a new sweep or threshold adjustment, and sometimes an adjustment to the strike so the door pulls tight against the seal. We check how the door closes and where light shows around it, then fix those spots. If the door itself is warped or rotted, we'll tell you and talk about replacement.

Can you replace an interior door and match the old ones?

We can install a new slab in an existing frame or a pre-hung door with a new frame. In older homes, matching original panel styles and heights may take some searching or custom trimming. We'll show you options and fit the new door so it lines up with the trim and swings cleanly.

My sliding patio door is hard to open. Can you fix it?

Often, yes. We clean the track, adjust the rollers and check for bent or worn track sections. If the rollers are worn out, we can replace them. A smooth-sliding door is safer and easier on the frame, especially in winter when everyone is trying to keep the cold out.
