Handyman in Sherman, IL

Sherman sits just north of Springfield, across the Sangamon River and alongside I-55 and the old Route 66 corridor. The town was platted in 1858 and got its name, the story goes, when David Sherman's name was drawn from a hat among the four men who laid it out. Early residents were largely Italian immigrants who worked the area's coal mines, and for a century Sherman stayed small, with only about two hundred people when it incorporated as a village in 1959. That changed in the 1970s, when easy access to Springfield and the interstate brought steady residential growth. By the 2020 census Sherman had about 4,700 residents, and most of its housing dates from the last fifty years: ranch homes from the 1970s and 1980s, and larger two-story and walkout-basement homes in the subdivisions built since. Because the town sits on open, gently rolling ground north of the river, wind and storms are a fact of life here. In March 2023, a strong tornado tore through part of the village, and the repairs from that day are a reminder of how quickly a fence, a gutter run or a section of siding can be undone.

Sherman's community life gathers around a few spots. The Village Park on the south side has an amphitheater that hosts summer concerts, pavilions, a pond and a mile-long walking loop, and the splash pad is busy all summer. The Sherman-Williamsville Trail, a rail-trail about four and a half miles long, connects the two towns that share the Williamsville-Sherman school district. Golfers know The Rail, the eighteen-hole course that hosted an LPGA event for three decades, and the Route 66 Crossing area on the north side has brought more shops and services to town. Just south, across the Sangamon, Carpenter Park's wooded bluffs and the river bottoms mark the line between Sherman and Springfield's north end.

What Sherman neighbors book most

Sherman is a quick trip up I-55 or Peoria Road for us, and we're used to fitting a few Sherman jobs into the same day.

Jobs we handle a lot around Sherman

Sherman's housing is mostly from the past fifty years, so the work leans toward maintenance and upgrades rather than old-house restoration. We see a lot of fence and gate repair, since wind sweeps across the open lots and many fences back onto fields or the edges of subdivisions. Gutter cleaning, downspout extensions and storm-related patching follow close behind. Inside, it's replacing original ceiling fans and light fixtures, adjusting doors that have shifted in homes with walkout basements, swapping worn faucets and toilet parts, mounting TVs in family rooms and finished basements, and building out garage shelving for families who need room for bikes, tools and sports gear.

Questions we hear in Sherman

Can you help with repairs after a storm?

Yes. After high winds we fix leaning or flattened fence sections, reset posts, re-hang and seal gutters that pulled loose, replace damaged downspouts, and patch interior drywall where water came in. For major roof or structural damage you'll need a roofer or builder, but we can handle the long list of smaller repairs around the house and yard, and we're glad to document the work for your insurance claim.

My 1980s ranch has original ceiling fans and fixtures. Can you update them all at once?

Yes, and doing several in one visit is the most efficient way. We check each ceiling box to make sure it's fan-rated, add braces where needed, and our licensed electricians connect the new fans and fixtures, along with any dimmers or smart switches you want. You'll end up with brighter, quieter rooms and a single bill.

Do you install sump pump alarms or check basement drainage?

We can help with the parts around it. During a seasonal visit we check that gutters and downspouts carry water well away from the foundation, add downspout extensions or splash blocks, and look for low spots where water pools against the house. We can also install a battery-powered high-water alarm near the sump pit, so you hear about a problem before the finished basement does.

Can you build storage in a Sherman garage that also holds two cars?

Yes. Most Sherman garages have room on the side walls and overhead that never gets used. We anchor wall rails and shelving into the studs, hang ceiling racks rated for the load over the hood of the car, and add hooks for bikes, ladders and yard tools, keeping clear of the door tracks and the opener. The cars still fit, and the floor stops being a storage shelf.
